Come, Ye Thankful People, Come!

Come, ye thankful people, come,
 raise the song of harvest home;
 all is safely gathered in,
 ere the winter storms begin.
 God our Maker doth provide
 for our wants to be supplied;
 come to God's own temple, come,
 raise the song of harvest home.

Thanksgiving is such a sweet time of tradition, family, worship,
and food. And we are truly grateful for how He has given us
another holiday season to cherish, and store up in our hearts.
 Here is a glimpse into our Thanksgiving celebration:
every thanksgiving I meet my dad at Richwood United Methodist
Church for worship at 8am. So glad Dave Bailey handed out CDs.
I'll be bringing mine to Uganda so I can worship virtually next year!

Want to Help Haiti??

 I was amazed. I hadn’t heard anything like it before. No, that isn’t right. I had heard something like it – at a ballgame. What made it amazing was where I was standing as I heard this.

I was in the backyard of Paul and Pat Shingledecker in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. They were WGM missionaries who were working with Radio Lumière, a Christian radio ministry that touches over 90% of Haiti with real help for Haitians’ daily lives. As I stood there on a hillside above a busy street, I could hear voices of hundreds of people. I couldn’t see anyone because the yard had a security fence around it, but I had never heard so many people so crowded together while standing in a backyard all alone. It was overwhelming. And that was Haiti before the earthquake.

Before they were called to a regional management position, Paul and Pat had dedicated a career to helping Haiti. They know the culture, the people, and the language. Then the earthquake struck. And Paul headed to Haiti to help his friends out.

Now, those friends have asked Paul and Pat to return for the next two years. Radio Lumière is Haitian- run. The staff was hit hard by the earthquake; in fact, three staff members died, and most lost friends and family. But in the midst of the chaos, the staff got the station back on the air within a few days following the quake. The station continues to minister to the needs of Haiti with vital news, public health information, programs on dealing with the emotions of survival, and with the gospel message.  They have distributed tarps and other supplies, are planning to help with building efforts, and are effectively making a difference in their nation.

We are hearing a lot about failed attempts to help Haiti these days. If you are frustrated by empty promises and wasted resources, and want to be a part of an organization that is seeing results, consider a gift to WGM’s Haiti Crisis fund to help Paul and Pat get back to Haiti for the next two years of ministry. They are raising their support right now, and Haiti needs them right now to make a real difference in its time of need. Paul will help Radio Lumière as it responds to this ongoing crisis. Any amount over our goal of $73,000 to get Paul and Pat funded will go toward further helping Haiti recover from this disaster.

Haitians helping Haitians in an overwhelming situation. Now that will make a difference. An amazing difference. Visit www.wgm.org/Haiticrisis <

Stir me, oh! stir me, Lord

Living Faith: Willing to be stirred as a pot of paintMay this hymn be the song on our lips and the prayer of our hearts.  The inspiration for Helen Roseveares book, Living Faith:

  1. Stir me, oh, stir me, Lord, I care not how,
    But stir my heart in passion for the world,
    Stir me to give, to go, but most to pray;
    Stir till the blood-red banner be unfurled
    O'er lands that still in heathen darkness lie,
    O'er deserts where no cross is lifted high.

  1. Stir me, oh, stir me, Lord, till all my heart
    Is filled with strong compassion for these-souls;
    Till Thy compelling word drives me to pray;
    Till Thy constraining love reach to the poles
    Far north and south, in burning deep desire,
    Till east and west are caught in love's great fire.

  1. Stir me, oh, stir me, Lord, till prayer is pain,
    Till prayer is joy, till prayer turns into praise;

    Stir me, till heart and will and mind, yea, all
    Is wholly Thine to use through all the days.
    Stir, till I learn to pray exceedingly;
    Stir, till I learn to wait expectantly.

  1. Stir me, oh, stir me, Lord, Thy heart was stirred
    By love's intensest fire, till Thou didst give
    Thine only Son, Thy best beloved One,
    E'en to the dreadful cross, that I might live.
    Stir me to give myself so back to Thee,
    That Thou canst give Thyself again through me.

  1. Stir me, oh, stir me, Lord, for I can see
    Thy glorious triumph-day begin to break;
    The dawn already gilds the eastern sky;
    Oh, Church of Christ, arise, awake, awake.
    Oh! stir us, Lord, as heralds of that day.
    For night is past, our King is on His way.

Blessing Complete Strangers

We are all having a wonderful time here in Ashland, KY with Michael and Emilie. The congregation here at Christ UMC has been so warm and welcoming and truly encouraging. As Kelly and I have been praying about this trip we have been praying that God would also use us to be an encouragement to other people as well.

On Monday night we had the opportunity to go on a date night as Emilie and Michael volunteered to watch our boys. We went into Huntington WV which has a bunch of restaurants and stores that we could enjoy. After a wonderful dinner, browsing a bookstore, and a cup of Starbucks coffee we decided to head back.

As we walked into the parking garage I noticed on the other side a truck with its hood up and a couple standing beside it. The gentleman asked if we had jumper cables and could give them a hand. I did and gladly drove over to help them out. We introduced ourselves and met Todd and Donna. Todd is a "tow boat captain" and works on the Ohio river for 3 weeks at a time. Donna is a stay at home mom with 3 boys, one of them being autistic. Todd and Donna do not have any family in the area and their closest friend was the one babysitting their boys so that they could go on a date. Needless to say Todd and Donna don't get out much together. Sadly their truck was not working and even though we hooked up the jumper cables and let it sit for a good 15 minutes it refused to start. The garage was pretty empty and Todd and Donna had no one they could call to come get them. After a bit of convincing we talked them into letting us drive them home about 20 some miles in the opposite direction of Michael and Emilie's house. We were very glad to help out this couple and enjoyed our conversation on the way back to their place.

I share this story not to make us look good but rather to share how we saw an opportunity Jesus gave us to be His hands and feet for two strangers last night. We will probably never see Todd and Donna again but I pray we will see them in heaven some day. For our ability to help this couple out, which took roughly a half hour of our time we now have people we can pray for. Pray that Todd and Donna continue to strengthen their marriage and find times to get away. Pray for Donna as she is home with her three boys each day as Todd is at work. Pray for Todd as it seems whenever he is furthest from home something goes wrong back home. Pray that their house will sell as they need more room for their big family. Pray for their son, Caleb, as they love on this autistic child. Pray for their other two sons as they continue to grow that they would fall in love with Jesus. Pray that one day we will see Todd and Donna and their three boys again standing before the throne of Jesus.

Who will you be a blessing to today and be able to pray for?

Cornucopia...

"You crown the year with Your goodness, and Your paths drip with abundance." -Psalm 65:11

lavish. extravagant. beautiful. undeserved.  He just keeps heaping blessing upon blessing.  indeed, let us declare with the Psalmist:

"blessed be the Lord, who daily loads us with benefits, the God of our salvation! selah." -Psalm 68:19

I've fallen off the journal wagon- but the gratitude keeps welling up in my spirit- so the list is un-numbered- and rightly so, as we cannot ever recount every blessing and gift...

--6am little blessings. my rowdy, snuggly call to prayer
--candles lit
--soft tunes gently welcoming the day
--brothers falling into gracious rhythm of play
--watching their friendship grow

 --friends of my own who always know they are welcome
