Tuesdays With Student Leaders

Edwin and Caleb
van stuffed with people, unloading at our home at 8am on Friday.  chai brewing on the stove.  chairs filling our living room.  voices ascending in praise to our God.  laughter.  prayer.  team-building.  solitude.  this weekend we held the university student Leaders Retreat at our house.  what a blessing!

Edwin is one of the interns this year, and Caleb has become fast friends with him!  whenever Edwin comes to meet with Josh he has to plan an extra 15 minutes to see Caleb's latest coloring pages!  I love that our boys are getting to meet and enjoy some of our african friends.  what a blessing it is to see them welcoming these ones into our home and into our hearts!  and they are learning what it means to serve and love the people God places in our lives.  for that i am grateful.
Kelly and Mary

Mary is one of our student leaders- she reminds me so much of my sister (and they are the same age!).  Mary is at every activity, so involved, and one of our youngest leaders.  I am glad we get to keep her around for awhile!  Many of our leaders are upperclassmen who will be graduating soon, so it's vital that we find and train up the younger students like Mary!

enter and receive.

some days the gifts are wrapped in ribbon and smiles.  easy to spot.  easy to receive.
other days the gifts are buried beneath a layer of dirt.  hard to find.  harder still to receive.
this year of "enter in" has me receiving each moment as a gift.  He beckons me to enter this moment, this battle, this story.  fully.  and it has been joy and struggle.

and so i keep counting- the joys and the trials- as pure gift from a good God:

sweet, silly boys catching raindrops on tongues
good friends. here.
head tipped back, mouth open wide, receiving this very moment.

team-building games, like a shrinking island and a spider web
the privilege of partnering with these african university students
laughter and smiles, truth and revelation through games
watching them prepare to change the world

a counter full of dishes
students pitching in
happy work of hospitality
this house full to the brim

poor little man home sick
rest for his body
doctors nearby if he needs to be treated
cheap medicine
being there when he needs me

Understanding MKs

Here are two blog posts I've read recently that really give a true glimpse into the lives of MKs (Missionary Kids) or TCKs (Third Culture Kids).  These are the unique and awesome kids we minister at Heritage, and the awesome and unique kids we are raising right now.  Say a special prayer for them, will you?

Ash Wednesday

excerpt from the Book of Common Prayer

Litany of Penitence
Most holy and merciful Father:
We confess to you and to one another,
and to the whole communion of saints
in heaven and on earth,
that we have sinned by our own fault
in thought, word, and deed;
by what we have done, and by what we have left undone.

We have not loved you with our whole heart, and mind, and strength. We have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We have not forgiven others, as we have been forgiven.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
We have been deaf to your call to serve, as Christ served us. We have not been true to the mind of Christ. We have grieved your Holy Spirit.
Have mercy on us, Lord.
We confess to you, Lord, all our past unfaithfulness: the pride, hypocrisy, and impatience of our lives,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our self-indulgent appetites and ways, and our exploitation of other people,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our anger at our own frustration, and our envy of those more fortunate than ourselves,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our intemperate love of worldly goods and comforts, and our dishonesty in daily life and work,
We confess to you, Lord.
Our negligence in prayer and worship, and our failure to commend the faith that is in us,
We confess to you, Lord.
Accept our repentance, Lord, for the wrongs we have done: for our blindness to human need and suffering, and our indifference to injustice and cruelty,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For all false judgments, for uncharitable thoughts toward our neighbors, and for our prejudice and contempt toward those who differ from us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
For our waste and pollution of your creation, and our lack of concern for those who come after us,
Accept our repentance, Lord.
Restore us, good Lord, and let your anger depart from us;
Favorably hear us, for your mercy is great.
Accomplish in us the work of your salvation,
That we may show forth your glory in the world.
By the cross and passion of your Son our Lord,
Bring us with all your saints to the joy of his resurrection.
Amen.

Tuesdays with the Leisures and Burkes

We know the struggle of fund-raising.  We know it well. It took us two whole years to get to Uganda.  So we know especially how to pray for new missionaries on Homeland Ministry Assignment.

At prayer meeting we spent some time lifting up some dear future colleagues, Ray and Nicole Leisure.  They are in the midst of raising their support and are praying to be in Uganda by August!  But this will take a miracle!  Good thing that we serve a miracle-working God!

And we praised Jesus for Matt and Joy Burke, who have their work permits and will be heading to Uganda in March!   This is a big answer to prayer as we had really hoped they could be here in time to join us on Field Retreat April 1!  Pray as they pack and say goodbyes, and that their small children make the transition well!

Here is the text from our prayer meeting last night.  I pray that it encourages you to pray BIG for God's Glory!

Pray Big for God’s Glory: found on prayermeetings.org

Mrs. Charles E. Cowman in Springs in the Valley reminds of us a story about “Alexander the Great who had a famous, but indigent, philosopher in his court who was once particularly straightened in his circumstances. To whom should he apply but to his patron, the conqueror of the world? His request was no sooner made than granted. Alexander gave him a commission to receive of his treasury whatever he wanted. He immediately demanded in his sovereign’s name ten thousand pounds. The treasurer, surprised at so large a demand, refused to comply, but waited upon the king and represented the affair, adding withal how unreasonable he thought the petition and how exorbitant the sum. Alexander listened with patience, but as soon as he heard the remonstrance replied, ‘Let the money be instantly paid. I am delighted with this philosopher’s way of thinking; he has done me a singular honor: by the largeness of his request he shows the high idea he has conceived both of my superior wealth and my royal munificience.’”

We can dishonor God by asking too little. Yes, He can give us a parking place but He can also
open great and unlimited fields of Christian service. “Saints have never yet reached the limit to
the possibilities of prayer. Whatever has been attained or achieved has touched but the fringe of
the garment of a prayer-hearing God. We honor the riches both of His power and love only by
large demands.” A. T. Pierson

We remember the story in 2 Kings 13 of Joash the king of Israel who went to see Elisha when the
prophet was dying. Elisha’s instructions are recorded in verses 15-19, Elisha said, “Get a bow and some arrows,” and he did so. “Take the bow in your hands,” he said to the king of Israel. When he had taken it, Elisha put his hands on the king’s hands. “Open the east window,” he said, and he opened it. “Shoot!” Elisha said, and he shot. “The LORD’s arrow of victory, the arrow of victory over Aram!” Elisha declared. “You will completely destroy the Arameans at Aphek.” Then he said, “Take the arrows,” and the king took them. Elisha told him, “Strike the ground.” He struck it three times and stopped. The man of God was angry with him and said, “You should have struck the ground five or six times; then you would have defeated Aram and completely destroyed it. But now you will defeat it only three times.”  God’s wants to give us more victory than we ask for. “We have not because we ask not.” Ja 4:2

Asking too little not only limits the blessings we get from God, but also limits the glory He gets
out of our lives.
We forget that He “is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or
think.
” Eph 3:20

When asking someone for help, we are embarrassed and careful not to ask for too much. We know others are limited and we don’t want to strain or be burdensome to them. When we come to pray, we act as if God is limited or stingy with His blessings. We ask as if we were afraid to ask “BIG”. We seem to be content with creature comforts, our daily bread and the physical health of ourselves and our friends, when we should be praying for God to do great and mighty things in the advancement of His kingdom. Why pray for a good attendance at church Sunday when we can pray for a great ingathering of souls across our nation. Why just pray for lost family members when we could be praying for the lost around the world. God’s kingdom is bigger than our church or denomination.
God can not give too much, or run out of supplies, or be found unable to accomplish His will. All we have to do is to abide in Him and “And all things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer,
believing, ye shall receive.” Mt 21:22

Did God make this world and all things in it and does He not continue to sustain and govern it? It is without question that such an Omnipotent God could not be strained with our request. The problem with our praying is not that we ask for too much, but that we don’t ask for enough. God is more glorified when He does greater and more unusual things, especially those that the world can see.

Thou art coming to a King,
Large petitions with thee bring;
For his grace and power are such
None can ever ask too much.
–John Newton

Gifts of this Calling

i love this crazy wonderful life we live.  there are days when i am stay at home mama.  there are days when i am cherished wife.  there are days when i'm the preacher, the preschool music teacher, the Bible study leader, the social media professional or the confidant.  and i enjoy all those hats i wear.  trying to balance them all is a circus act, so i was so encouraged when i found this quote and can echo these words with my life.:
"For years, I tried to juggle all the elements of life.  I knew there was a God call on my life to be in ministry, and yet I also knew it could never be at the expense of my family.  When I tried to juggle all the boxes, I learned the hard way that it is difficult to keep them all from crashing down.  So I no longer have boxes for marriage, ministry and motherhood.  Instead, God has shown me that there is a divine order for my life.
Instead of trying to make sure that everything is balanced (there is no prescribed formula for balance), God showed me that I am to break of the box mentality and instead seek Him for divine order for my life.  Each day differs from the day before,  The dynamics change, but the call on my life doesn't.  Marriage, motherhood, and ministry are all cohesively part of that call.  God anoints us for our entire call." -Darlene Zschech

Friday Five: Scripture Prayers for HIS

The senior high at Heritage International School has been on my heart this week.  And so today, will you join me in praying these Scripture prayers for these youth?

  1. I pray that the Christian students at Heritage would feel surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses, that they would lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares, and that they may run with perseverance the race that is set out for them, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of their faith... may they consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest they become wear and discouraged in their souls. -Hebrews 12:1-3
  2. Please strengthen the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for their feet... send them "Aaron and Hur" friends to hold up their hands-so that together we can secure the victory at Heritage! -Hebrews 12:12-13 and Exodus17:12
  3. May they draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having their hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and their bodies washed with pure water.  May they hold fast the confession of their hope without wavering, for You who promised are faithful!  May they stir one another up to love and good works, and not cave to peer pressure.  -Hebrews 10:22-24
  4. I pray that You would grant them, according to the riches of Your glory, to be strengthened with might through Your Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in their hearts through faith: that they being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height-that they would really know the love of Christ which passes knowledge;that they may be filled with all the fullness of God.  -Ephesians 3:15-19
  5. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever Amen. -Ephesians 3:20-21

a visit to the doctor

living in the city, we have the luxury of good, close medical care.  and for that we are grateful.  after a weekend of stomach issues, i decided i ought to make sure it wasn't anything serious.

i didn't need to go to the hospital.  but it is close, and they have an outpatient clinic.  and i needed a good story for this post :)

so what does going to see a doctor look like for us here?

first you stop and allow the security guards to check your car, open your doors, check your glove box, etc.  then you approach the reception desk.  upon finding the entire desk front lined with people, you hang back a bit, until there is a space for you.  but of course the concept of an orderly line escapes africans.  so as soon as there is the slightest gap, another person slips right into the front.  waiting in line, is very similar to sitting in traffic.  the bigger and more aggressive one wins.  so i put my driving attitude on, and make my presence known at the front desk.  explain that your card will be filed under H for Hallahan, not K for Kelly.  then you go to the cashier to pay the consultation fee.  and back to the reception desk.  and then to the waiting room.  and you wait.  see triage nurse, find out how much you weigh in kilograms.  and you wait.  and see the doctor.  and then to the lab.  and to the cashiers to pay for said labwork.  and then back to the lab for the bloodwork.  and then back to the waiting room.  and you wait for your lab results.  notice the mama nursing her baby.  see someone much more ill than you sitting nearby.  write a sermon in the meantime.  friendly cashier walks by notices your Bible, and asks, "You're born again?  Me too?".  woman covered from head to toe (muslim??) moves to another section of the waiting room.  finally results are back.  see the doctor.  quick jot of prescription anti-biotics for some bacteria.  then to the cashier to pay for said prescription.  then to pharmacy to pick up prescriptions.  and just a mere 3 1/2  hours later you are on your way home to have some lunch.  a day in the life of a Kampala missionary.

Tuesdays with My Valentine

me and Josh at Murchison Falls, August 2004
9 years ago I was in Uganda. all. alone.  Josh and I had been dating only 5 months when I embarked on my worst year ever, teaching in Uganda.  It would have been much better if he could have been here with me.  Little did we know way back then, that we would be here today.  But I am so glad we are!

And so today, on this love day, I want to share just how grateful I am to be in this together.  I certainly could never do this alone- this raising a godly family, this ministering to international students, this cross-cultural adventure.

me and Josh at Paraa, December 2011
It takes everything we've got to do this life.  But Josh is the perfect partner on this crazy wonderful adventure of a life.  I am forgetful and he remembers.  I am a messy and he cleans.  I dream big and he makes it happen.  He is the strong and firm parent, and I am the creative and nurturing one.  In so many ways we complement each other.  And I am so thankful that God planned this man for me to walk alongside!

Who are you walking alongside?  And what makes you a perfect fit?

Ya never know...

...what you'll see on your drive to school.

The other day as we drove down our hill, we were greeted by this mama pig at the foot of our hill!  The boys were amazed.  And we had a great story to tell the rest of the day.  It just never gets old.  So grateful He has called to this wild, wonderful place, where wonders never cease to amaze me.

What has surprised you today?

Release the River!

There is much evil and darkness on this beautiful continent.  So many who don't know Jesus, such mighty strongholds.  And my brother is called to take the light into one of these dark places- the Democratic Republic of the Congo.  He is actually taking a night bus (pray for his safety!!) tonight to Kampala to sort out some VISA issues, before his trip into the DRC next week (read more about his itinerary here).

Watch this clip and the join us in praying!

"Holy Spirit release the river of Your power across East Africa!  Pour forth with such power that it knocks down strongholds, and tears down walls.  We see the enemy nervous, blocked in a corner; he is dangerous.  But You are the Almighty!  Protect Scott and Billy, Meg and Joanna and the kids from any retaliation he might send.  Post Your angels at every point of conflict.  We claim the victory already won for us at Calvary, and stand strong in the face of a defeated foe!  Bring glory to Yourself as we lift You high!  In the strong and matchless name of Jesus we pray. Amen."

Tuesdays with MKs

Some of the coolest kids I know are MKs (missionary kids) and TCKs (third culture kids).  they are well travelled, take crazy culture stuff in stride and have really cool stories.  oh, and they are funny.  we love working at Heritage where we interact with these awesome kids on a daily basis.

009
Friday night we had a few MKs over for pizza, wii and a movie.  oh, when you have a movie night you don’t set up a screen and a projector?  we love that we have access to mission equipment in the name of “ministry”!  and these kids are a worthy cause.  it’s tough some days being in a strange culture, without all the comforts of home the states (fact: most MK's wouldn’t call their passport culture “home”)- and you just want to play wii and eat pizza and feel “normal”.  or maybe you’re going through some personal stuff and you just want someone to talk to.  that’s why we serve at Heritage.  and we love it.  I get to open up our house to youth, bake them snickerdoodles, and watch them play with my kids and just have fun!  we are so blessed!

is there someone in your life that could use a safe place to hang out?  or a listening ear?  sometimes that is all it takes to be a “missionary”! or if you want to join us in blessing MKs sending iTunes gift cards is always a welcome gift.  or if you know some families with young MKs you could make this- it would be a huge blessing (it takes at least an hour before the food arrives at most restaurants!)!

Guess that movie- leave your guess in the comments section!

traffic

traffic.  it's just a reality here in Kampala.  so we play the "Make a Traffic Face" game, and the "Opposites Game" (where you complain about traffic while flying down the road, or rejoice in the speedy travel whilst sitting in traffic, AKA the "Sarcasm Game").  we tell stories.  we sing songs.  and we pray. a lot.  we pray "Jesus, make this car smaller than it really is to fit through this space."  and we pray "May Your angels be the unseen buffer between us and anything we cannot control."  and the ever popular "Jesus, keep us."  I pray that one a lot.

So, the next time you hop in your car for a quick trip to Target, say a prayer for us.  Or the next time you're sitting in traffic, pass the time by lifting us up to the Father.  Pray for safety on the roads, for happy travelers, and for our car to stay functional and reliable!

Thank you for traveling this road with us!
